Krishnagar/Purulia, Jan. 2: Maoists shot dead two CPM leaders, in Nadia’s Chapra and Purulia’s Balarampur, within 12 hours since last night.

Ramprasad Mondal, 50, a local committee member of the CPM and a primary teacher, was cycling to school around 10.45 this morning when he ran into a gang of six, between 20 and 25 years old.

Dressed in shirts, trousers and sleeveless sweaters, the youths surrounded Mondal on a field in Madhabpur village in Chapra, about 130km from Calcutta.

Witnesses told police that two of them whipped out revolvers and shot Mondal from point-blank range in the chest and head. He died on the spot.

Mondal is the sixth CPM leader to be killed by Maoists in Nadia since June 2005.

“The murder is the handiwork of Maoists. Police movement is difficult in the area because of poor road links. The Maoists are taking advantage of that to strengthen their base in Chapra,” Nadia superintendent of police H.K. Kusumakar said.

Around 50 printed leaflets were found at the spot that warned villagers against testifying in cases pending against Maoists. “Anyone standing witness against us will meet a similar fate,” one of them read.

However, Mondal was not a witness in any such case.

Some posters also warned the villagers against hobnobbing with the police.

Local CPM legislator Samsul Alam said the rebels had earlier threatened to kill Mondal, who had been campaigning against Maoist activities

Mondal’s daughter Mohua, 20, said the family knew about the threat. “My father had not been staying out late. That is why the Maoists killed him in broad daylight,” she said.

Another band of Maoists chose the cover of darkness to kill Narayan Majhi.

The 42-year-old CPM branch committee member had gone to bed around 11 last night when 20 men in olive green fatigues barged into his house in a Balarampur village in Maoist-infested Purulia.

They tied the widower’s hands and dragged him out. The gang then shot him in the chest and ear.

“When my son shouted for help, I pleaded with them to let him go… They dragged him out and killed him,” wept Majhi’s 72-year-old mother Dhundi.

The killers left behind posters threatening to intensify Maoist movement against corruption in gram panchayats and the CPM.

“Narayan Majhi was killed by Maoists,” said Pranab Kumar Das, the additional superintendent of police.

Hours before Majhi was shot, 20 Maoists raided a house 4km away. They took away a double-barrel gun, a motorbike and a cellphone from the house of Abinash Kumar, a ration dealer at Jugidihi village.

The gang then raided two more houses before setting fire to the home of a CPM local committee member in an adjoining village.

Altaf Ansari, a senior member of the Harkat-ul-Jehad-al-Islami (HuJI) militant group wanted for carrying out the serial blasts in Uttar Pradesh in November, was arrested from a house in Baranagar area in Kolkata, the police said on Saturday.

“Ansari was living in a house on the Cossipore Road in Kolkata for quite some time. He was arrested around 2 pm on Friday in a joint operation of the West Bengal Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and the Special Task Force (STF) of the Uttar Pradesh police,” Rajiv Kumar, Director General of Police (CID), told IANS.

“The STF of the Uttar Pradesh police had asked for help to capture the militant. A joint operation led to his arrest. He is being interrogated,” Kumar said, adding that Ansari would be produced in the Alipur police court.

Answari, also known as Raju, is one of the most wanted militants who was involved in the November 23 serial blasts in Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow, Varanasi and Faizabad court premises that killed over a dozen people and left injured more than 50.

On December 25, in a joint operation, the Uttar Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir police arrested two HuJI militants from Doda area of the Jammu region for their involvement in the blasts.

The two, identified as Sajjad and Tariq Kashmiri alias Akhthar, were arrested by the police forces of the two states along with sleuths of central security agencies.

The names of these militants, including Altaf, came up during the interrogation of HuJI militants Mohammed Khalid and Tariq, arrested by Uttar Pradesh police’s Special Task Force and central security agencies on December 21.

The blasts were carried out after the militants received orders from their commanders in Jammu and Kashmir.

Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HuJI), meaning Movement of Islamic Holy War, is a Sunni Islamic fundamentalist paramilitary organisation active in Bangladesh and India since the 1990s. It was banned in Bangladesh in 2005 and was earlier labelled a terrorist organisation by the US in the late 1990s.

Taslima withdraws controversial lines from her book

Kolkata, (PTI): Bangladeshi writer Taslima Nasreen on Friday said she was withdrawing some controversial lines from her autobiographical novel ‘Dwikhandita’ as those evoked strong protests from “a section of people in India.”

“I am withdrawing controversial lines in ‘Dwikhandita’, written in 2002 with the memory of Bangladesh in the 1980s when the military threw out secularism in the country. I wrote the book in support of the people who defended secular values. I had no intention to hurt anybody’s sentiment,” she told PTI here over phone from an undisclosed location.

“Now since some people in India claim that it hurt their sentiments, I am withdrawing some lines in the book,” Taslima said.

The Bangladeshi writer hoped that from now on, there would be no controversy, and “I’ll be able to live peacefully in this country.”

Taslima said she had already asked the publisher of the book ‘People’s Book Society’ not not to circulate copies of the book which were in their possession.

“I asked my publisher to bring out the next edition of the book deleting those controversial lines”, she said.

A spokesman of the publisher said that Taslima had requested them not to circulate copies of the book.

“We will withdraw 30 to 40 copies, already in circulation, from the market and in the next edition we will delete three controversial pages of the book,” she said.

Taslima was virtually hounded out of Kolkata following large-scale violence during a strike called by the All India Minority Forum, a platform of minorities, demanding cancellation of her visa.

Shortly after the violence for which the army had to be called out, Taslima went to Jaipur from where she was moved to Delhi. At present, she is staying at an undisclosed location.

Beware of Pak-made currency notes: RBI
25 Nov 2007, 1520 hrs IST,PTI

SALEM (Tamil Nadu): The Reserve Bank of India has cautioned banks to be on their guard against “Pakistan-made” fake Indian currency notes of high quality print, which were in circulation and hard to detect.

The currency notes of Rs 100 denomination came to light during RBI’s routine examination of a bunch of soiled notes sent by one of the State Bank of India branches in this city of Tamil Nadu recently, police said here on Sunday.

The RBI Chennai unit, during examination, found 11 of the notes to be fake and alerted the Fort Branch of SBI here, which in turn lodged a complaint with the local police.

Police quoted bank officials as saying that RBI Chennai in its communication to the bank had stated that these notes were so sophisticatedly printed that they could not be detected easily.

However, details were not available as to how RBI found the notes to be of Pakistan origin.

PM condemns UP blasts, sanctions ex-gratia for those killed

New Delhi (PTI): Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday condemned the serial blasts in Uttar Pradesh and sanctioned relief of Rs 1 lakh each for the kin of those killed in the incidents.

Home Minister Shivraj Patil described the blasts as “yet another attempt by anti-national elements to spread panic” and asserted that the government would continue to fight terrorism in a resolute manner.

Singh condoled the loss of lives in the blasts and expressed concern for the injured, the official spokesman said.

He announced ex-gratia relief of Rs one lakh for the kin of those killed in the blasts from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund, the spokesman said.

Each seriously injured person will get Rs 50,000.

Condemning the blasts, Patil said the Centre is in touch with the state government to see if any assistance is required by it.

He conveyed his sympathies to the bereaved families and wished speedy recovery to those injured in the terror strikes.

“I am confident that peace-loving people of the country will give a fitting reply to such elements,” the Home Minister said.

Multiple blasts in Uttar Pradesh, several killed

Blasts rocked Lucknow, Faizabad and Varanasi (AP Photo)
LUCKNOW: Serial blasts on Friday rocked three cities of Uttar Pradesh killing ten people, including two lawyers, in Faizabad and Varanasi while injuring two in state capital in explosions triggered by terrorists apparently targeting lawyers.

The blasts, which took place between 1300 and 1330 hours, claimed seven lives in Faizabad and three in Varanasi. In both the places the dead included one lawyer each.

Superintendent of Police (City) in Varanasi Rajeev Malhotra said 20 people were also injured.

Those dead in Varanasi were identified as Bodh Raj Verma (advocate), Yagya Narain Singh, Moolchand Singh and a 11-year-old boy Sanjeev Kumar.

Two seriously injured persons in Faizabad have been rushed to King George Medical College hospital in Lucknow for treatment, District Magistrate Anil Garg said. In all about 25 people were injured in Faizabad.

In the state capital, the blast took place when a bomb kept in a cycle exploded, sources said adding the intensity of the blast here was not much.

According to reports, a militant group called ‘Indian Mujahideen’ has claimed responsibility for the blast. Reports said an e-mail was sent to major television networks in the country detailing the blasts, five minutes before it occurred.

Bomb disposal squads have been pressed into service in the three districts and were conducting extensive searches of court premises, police said.

Rescue work is going on in full swing, according to the Inspector-General of Lucknow. A high level meeting is taking place in Lucknow to respond to the situation

The blasts came a week after the Uttar Pradesh police along with central security agencies busted a Jaish-e-Mohammed module who wanted to target Rahul Gandhi. Lawyers had thrashed the three JeM militants when they were being produced before a court here.

Police believe the lawyers were targetted because they refused to appear in cases where suspected militants arrested.

Union Home Ministry got in touch with the state authorities to have a first-hand information about the situation in the state.

HuJI behind multiple blasts in UP?

NEW DELHI: Banned Harkat-ul-Jehadi Islamia (HuJI) is believed to be behind the serial blasts that rocked the Uttar Pradesh on Friday killing over a dozen people besides injuring several others.

Sources in the security agencies said the terror strike could be seen as a revenge by the banned outfit for the assault on its members including the recent incident when lawyers manhandled three Jaish-e-Mohammed militants arrested in Lucknow last week.

They said Jaish could have sought the help of HuJI as both the outfits followed the Deoband sect of Islam.

HuJI, which is being mainly run from Bangaldesh, has managed to establish cells in the Uttar Pradesh and that the outfit was responsible for previous major terror attacks.

All three court premises in Lucknow, Faizabad and Varanasi, targeted on Friday by the militants, had seen an incident of manhandling of militants or activists of anti-Ram temple in Ayodhya by lawyers.

Last week three JeM militants were roughed up by lawyers and the bar association refused to take up their cases.

Faizabad court premises was witness to an altercation between activists of a Babri Masjid organisation and lawyers. The local bar association had banned its advocates from taking up their case.

The court premises in Varanasi was witness last year to beating of a Waliullah Khan, the main accused in the Sankat Mochan temple explosions.

In a related development, an outfit by the name of Al-Hind Mujahideen had claimed responsibility about the attacks and sent emails to some media houses.
